I got a bike after moving to Glencoe, MO (west Wildwood) in 2008 because of the great trails around here. And, growing annually in numbers, since then our trails both in Wildwood and Chesterfield, not to mention the Katy Trail nearby, were calling my name. For a variety of reasons, the lure of the bike didn't really get to me until six weeks ago. I am now partially retired (or, only working part-time; whichever you would prefer to see the glass!) and I begin seeing my mornings as prime time for biking. However, while I had been doing aerobics and walking, the outdoors pose some restraints due to asthma and St. Louis watery summers. I chose to move forward. This blog will help me document my progress.
What I recall from my first three weeks (or four!) was a lot of feeling that I was working really hard. I checked tire pressure daily (yes, that is an issue!). I made sure to use my inhaler so that I could actually get oxygen into my lungs (or suck it in while panting). Now, six weeks in, I can do the fairly flat Monarch-Chesterfield levies without getting winded! Hills still take it out of me in a big way. One dress size down--only 4 pounds lost though.
